For us here on the island, Vancouver is the big city. And a beautiful one at that, filled with amazing restaurants, hotels and shops all surrounded by the most stunning ocean and coastal mountains. We usually get to head over about once or twice a year for a little bustling metropolis fix. Vancouver has a staggering selection of places to shop, eat and stay. So I thought I would fill you in on a new shopping discovery from our latest trip and also our favourite spots to eat and stay!
On this particular trip I wanted to shop somewhere that I had never shopped before. Broaden my horizons, so to speak. The Park Royal Mall was just over the Lions Gate bridge from where we were staying and it had tons of stores I wanted to check out. Part open air, part indoor mall it’s home to Anthropologie, Zara, Free People, Loft and most importantly to me Simons.
La Maison Simons is a 175 year old family owned fashion retailer from Quebec City which opened its first store on the west coast at Park Royal Mall in 2015. Previously only available to us west coasters online, now we have the chance to see everything in person! Which is awesome news for us!
The space itself is artfully designed with each section having a style of its own. Much of the art and sculptures inside are from local Vancouver artists. They carry menswear and womenswear of all kinds from lingerie to gym wear and everything in between. They even have a terrific home section with funky decor pieces.
I had been scoping out clothing “a la Simons” online for the last few months and they looked completely up my street. Affordable, fashionable and wearable. Needless to say I was like a kid in a candy store in this place. Both Rachel and I had piles of clothes to try on by the time we made our way around the whole store. We ended up with some really beautiful pieces that didn’t break the bank. It really was one of the best shopping experiences I’ve had in a long time. The next day we even brought Rachel’s husband Demian back to check out the menswear. He loaded up on dress shirts, casual long sleeves and also snagged a pair of killer grey pants. Score!
If you’re a seafood lover then the Blue Water Cafe is a place that you simply cannot miss. Located in the historic neighbourhood of Yaletown in a brick and beam heritage building, the Blue Water Cafes ambiance is as good as its menu. With a sushi raw bar and sky-scraping seafood towers it has everything a sea-foodies dreams are made of. We definitely have our favourite dishes and look forward to coming here every time we’re in Vancouver. Get the sable fish, you won’t regret it!
Another fabulous thing about Blue Water is that you’ll be treated to the royal service when dining here. The amazing staff will cater to your every whim. It’s truly a dining experience that you won’t soon forget!
I have done a fair bit of travelling and I have to say that the Fairmont Pacific Rim is one of the coolest city hotels I have ever stayed in. It’s one of those places that doesn’t have any faults. Everything about it is totally top-notch, down to the tiniest detail. The food, the rooms, the staff, the spa, the pool……. you could ask me how anything was and the answer would always be phenomenal.
Don’t let the look of this empty lobby fool you! It’s always packed every night with drinks flowing and live music bouncing off the walls. I love seeing the lively crowd when we get back to the hotel after a day of shopping. It gives me another hit of city life that this island girl rarely sees!
The pool has gorgeous views of the harbour during the day and at night you can see Grouse Mountain all lit up for night skiing. The rooms facing the pool have fireplaces on their terraces, so even on chilly Vancouver nights you can sit out and enjoy the view. We usually sit and fantasize about staying in the gorgeous mega suite that’s walled in windows in the picture above!
A little peek at one of the many bathroom layouts! All of the bathrooms that we have had in our rooms over the years have been slightly different, but they always have the same beautiful grey and white colour palette. The deep, jetted soaker tubs are such a wonderful treat after exploring the city all day.
I also have to mention the beds! They are so comfy that you won’t miss your own bed at all. Which can be a rare thing when away from home. All the rooms also have these really cool, back-lit pictures of different west coast nature scenes. Offering you a little taste of the beautiful BC landscape right in the heart of downtown.
I highly recommend you check out Simons online! You are sure to find classic, quality pieces that will be staples in your wardrobe.
